New Feature: "The Mugg Homebrew Report" with Josh Mugg

Hello, Kokomo! And welcome to the Mugg Homebrew Report.

First of all, a big thanks to Paul for asking me to start blogging on ASOK*. Since this is my first post, I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Josh Mugg. I’m a Lecturer of Philosophy at IU Kokomo. You can check out my research (mostly on philosophy of mind/psychology and little bit on philosophy of religion) at my webpages (here and here).

But much more to the p(o)int, I am a beer enthusiast. I have been brewing beer for about seven years, but I feel like I only got really good at it in the last two. On that note, another big thanks is due to Shawn Oberle, my brother-in-law and the head brewer at Broadway (see here and here); the folks at the Howard County Homebrew Club; and the local Kokomo homebrew store (and bicycle shop). I enjoy drinking all styles of beer. Right now, I especially enjoy IPAs, Sour Ales, and anything aged in Oak. I have two taps in my basement. One is reserved for sour ale, the other for "clean ale."

Here are just a few of the heady topics I’ll be cracking open in the coming months:

What’s brew’n at Mugg’s place? I’ll tell you all about my current brewing projects. (Currently on tap: Roeselare #2, London Porter. Currently brewing: Double Down Under IIPA, Roeselare #3. Next up: Sour/Brett Farmhouse Ale.)

Philosophy of beer: what makes good beer good and bad beer bad?

I want to brew! How do I start?

Shout-outs and reviews of my favorite breweries in Indiana, the US, and even Canada.

What are people really looking for in an IPA soulmate? (Hint: it's not a game to see how bitter you can make it!)

Why sour ale? Where to begin?

Why brew? Why not just buy?

Theology of brewing: why Christians should brew GOOD beer.

How can I tap into Kokomo’s rapidly-fomenting beer culture?

Remember, everyone: life is too short to drink crap beer!

His Muggliness, the Homebrewmaster.
